Hi, I’m Sihay — a researcher, science communicator, and botanical artist. My journey has been anything but linear, yet every twist has brought me closer to the path where science and art beautifully converge.
I’ve always believed that science isn’t confined to laboratories and dense textbooks. It’s in the curve of a leaf, the glow of a petal under morning light, the patterned wings of a moth, and even in the quiet harmony of a petri dish. This belief shapes everything I do — from conducting microbial research to painting Philippine endemic species. My goal is simple but powerful: to make science a part of our daily, creative lives.
Where It All Began: The Scientist in Me

My academic foundation lies in Microbiology and Zoology, gained from my undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of the Philippines. Fieldwork has also played a big part in shaping my scientific lens — from a 10-day data collection project in Puerto Princesa to a rugged 3-day hike in Mt. Makiling.
While I originally intended to become a medical doctor (completing 80 units of med school coursework), I found my true calling in research and science communication.
In grad school, I worked in the Plant Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory in UP Diliman, where I explored biosynthetic gene clusters in cyanobacteria for their potential antiviral properties.
Turning Point: From Medicine to Meaningful Communication

In 2017, I made a life-altering decision: I left med school to pursue a career in science communication. I started as a junior copywriter and eventually evolved into a technical writer, working with laboratories like Eurofins to craft newsletters and weekly articles.
I also wrote for clients in industries such as healthcare, law, technology, and productivity. My works have appeared in various platforms like:

The Artist Emerges: Painting the Invisible and Endangered
Around the same time I began writing professionally, I also started painting seriously. My work focuses on Philippine flora and fauna, with a particular love for endemic species and microscopic organisms. Through my brush, I honor the often-overlooked beauty in our environment — from intricate microorganisms to endangered wildlife.
I’m proud that my artworks have been featured in several shows and galleries, each piece serving as a tribute to biodiversity, conservation, and the often invisible wonders of life under the microscope.

Bridging Worlds
My journey is still evolving, but the mission remains clear: to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and everyday wonder. Whether it’s through an article, a painting, or a simple conversation, I want to inspire others to see the natural world not just as data, but as something living, breathing, and worth preserving.
If you’re curious to collaborate or just want to say hello, you can reach me at sihaybymaia@gmail.com. Let’s make something meaningful together.
